Current by GE is a subsidiary of General Electric focused on smart lighting research and product development. Their goal was to create a mobile-first, user-friendly configuration tool to reinvent the installation process.
Installing traditional DALI lighting systems was cumbersome: a Windows-based desktop application had to be used, technicians had to walk around the building with laptops, and devices had to be identified one by one, often during night shifts. This was a lengthy process full of potential errors, which posed a serious obstacle for large-scale projects.
LightSweep Digital is an iPad application with a visual, map-based interface where devices can be easily placed, identified, and controlled. Our main innovation was the “swipe identification” based on binary search, which significantly sped up device discovery. The app connects to a DALI controller via an encrypted Wi-Fi connection for data exchange and continuously displays the status of network devices, in line with the “digital twin” concept.
Development of LightSweep Digital began in 2016 and it was launched in 2017. Installation time was reduced by orders of magnitude, technicians’ work became simpler, and GE gained an innovation advantage. The collaboration proved that we can create value not only in mobile applications but also in IoT architecture and product UX—which, among other things thanks to recommendations from GE engineers, led to new international collaborations.
We also started another project with GE: the wireless Daintree EZ Connect mobile application (based on the Thread networking technology).
