Connected Mobility Platform

A next-generation connected mobility solution designed for smart wheelchair systems and healthcare devices. The project focused on creating an integrated ecosystem combining mobile applications, Bluetooth LE communication, cloud connectivity, and remote device management. Special attention was given to accessibility, security, and scalable system architecture to support future medical product integrations.

Client

Our client is a global leader in assistive mobility solutions, focusing on innovative wheelchair technologies and connected healthcare devices.

Challenge

The project aimed to build the next generation of connected, smart wheelchairs. Our partner lead this initiative with the goal of creating a fully integrated digital ecosystem around wheelchair systems.

The objective was to enable mobile devices to connect to on-board computers and Bluetooth LE components, supporting installation, configuration, maintenance, and daily operation for both end users and technicians. The system also required cloud-based remote monitoring, including status tracking, log access, configuration updates, and OTA software deployment.

As a solution targeting the medical domain, the system had to meet strict security and privacy requirements, while remaining flexible enough to support a wide range of medical products.

Solution

After several successful product discovery workshops, we started the project with a comprehensive feasibility study, forming the foundation of the entire solution. This detailed analysis, combined with ongoing technology consulting, provided clear direction and was highly valued by the client, serving as a key reference point for further decision-making.

Building on this, we delivered a high-fidelity, clickable UX/UI prototype based on in-depth research and tailored specifically for users with different physical abilities. The design defined the overall user experience and was carried forward by the client beyond our direct involvement.

As part of the validation phase, we also developed Proof of Concept iOS and Android applications enabling communication between the wheelchair hardware and end users via Bluetooth LE. In parallel, we planned and designed an admin interface with a similar feature set as the applications, as well as providing the possibility for managing hardware products in a fleet management system.

Result

The Proof of Concept was successfully approved by partner, validating both the technical approach and the user experience. Following this phase, they continued development with their internal teams, building on the foundations established during collaboration with MONDRIAAN.
