Challenge
Building on the success of the VIVARES system, LEDVANCE wanted to develop a globally applicable smart light installation and control solution that could be easily applied in smaller offices and retail spaces. The goal was a gateway-free, cost-effective lighting control system that does not require a central hub or IT infrastructure, but instead relies on Bluetooth and Zigbee Direct technologies to offer quick installation and simple operation. Product requirements originate from all regions where the company operates and the coordination and collection of post-development test results also span multiple markets.
Solution
Provision of Direct Easy mobile applications (iOS and Android) for fast and easy device installation, with gateway-free wireless communication based on Bluetooth and Zigbee Direct standards.
Fast device commissioning
Lights can be identified and connected quickly during installation using swipe-based interaction and visual feedback.
The VIVARES admin interface was expanded to support new device types, and the functionality of the original system was implemented over the wireless network: zone-based lighting control, including brightness, Tunable White, and RGB adjustment.
Wireless light control
Users can control and adjust connected lighting devices wirelessly through a simple and intuitive mobile interface.
Sensor-based automation
The system supports automated lighting behavior through integrated sensors, including dimming and presence-based control.
The project relied on joint technology and UX/UI workshops, followed by testing in Munich to support team collaboration. The customization and finalization of the Zigbee Direct SDK was carried out in close cooperation with the German contractor team, while the UI/UX design was validated by user testing at Ledvance HQ.
Advanced lighting configuration
Users can create lighting groups, configure scenes, adjust daylight behaviour, and manage Tunable White and RGB settings.
Results
No central hub or IT infrastructure is required, yet installation is still quick and easy directly via the mobile app. Zigbee 3.0 compatibility allows for network expansion and integration with other systems. With sensor integration and light optimization, significant energy savings can be achieved. The system improves employee well-being, concentration, and performance by simulating the natural light cycle.
