MONDRIAAN on Apple’s iOS14 surprise release

Are you an app owner working on your app update currently? You are not alone. Many business owners and PMs are squeezing their mobile developers to get their apps back on track since past weeks’ iOS release. If your app’s usage frequency is not so high you might be all right granting a few weeks allowance to yourselves to polish your app to perfection.

But all other mobile app owners, specially the ones providing daily or minute-by-minute services as finance, health, news, education and IoT could run into troubles with iOS14’s surprise release. Developers are very vocal about the matter.

WHY SO MANY BANKING APPLICATIONS STOPPED WORKING?

WHY SO MANY BANKING APPLICATIONS STOPPED WORKING?

Apple has proficient annual procedure for launching a new operating system. Developers can get acquainted to what is coming, can have a test drive of the features and functionalities for 3 months. During this period several beta versions are arriving, feedback can be provided to Apple. After having the beta period over, a final variant, a so-called Golden Master (GM) is issued. That production version operating system is made available to all iPhone and iPad to download.

The first beta of iOS14 was available for the developer community as early as beginning of July 2020. Does it mean that banks were not doing their homework in 3 months preparation time? Although this timeframe in banking terms is lightspeed, there is another reason.

Every beta version differs a bit, there could be differences even between the final beta versions and the GM. According to Apple’s previous practice first came the announcement having the GM available to the developers then a week later the new OS version was made public. Not in this time. Golden Master did not arrive a week ahead of the launch.

Apple made the announcement, published the GM then on the very next day made iOS14 available. Developers were stunned. They were left without this one-week preparation period to iron out possible flaws, run test to minimize chances of any accidental crashes. This sequence of events was unusual this year.

Finance sector produced wide range of reactions. Mobile-only fintech and mobile application cantered neo-banks were taking the sudden curve relatively well, while some of the major banking heavy weights are just got out of the game for a couple of weeks. Almost all diligently informed their clientele in sometimes alarming, witty or blunt push messages that updating their mobile phones’ OS is strongly not recommended.

One should not think that it is by the carelessness of those banks. Even on the contrary, internal processes, specially security and compliance concerns are the reason. Several end-to-end tests need to be carried out and it is more of a fortnight exercise as a single night one. However, it is better to grab more caffeine and make those shiny banking apps run again as we face higher adoption rate of iOS14 as any other previous ones.

This is a ‘big’ release from Apple containing significant changes on how our screen looks, how the mobile device is behaving. Customers want that new experience. Mondriaan’s Push Notification System, registered a first week adoption rate of 13,5% on a European userbase of 10M, that is higher than previous user adoption at earlier iOS releases.

We expect to have 25-30% of users having updated to the latest OS by the end of the first two weeks period.

Some mobile application owners still experiencing issues, need to get their act together since adaptation curve is steep. There is historically (max.) 4-5weeks time before the new OS penetration is going to reach 70%. If a bank does not want to cut itself off from 70% of its mobile application userbase needs to focus on key application features only and publish a crash-free app as soon as possible.
